1 pip in gold price: what one pip is actually worth

On XAUUSD a pip is not what most people think it is. Work it out for your size.

Quick answer: 1 pip in gold price is a $0.10 move on XAUUSD. Gold going from 4,200.00 to 4,200.10 is 1 pip. From 4,200.00 to 4,201.00 is 10 pips, and a $10 move, 4,200 to 4,210, is 100 pips.

What 1 pip is worth: 1.00 lot = $10, 0.10 lot = $1, 0.01 lot = $0.10.

Gold pip value confuses more people than any other part of trading XAUUSD, and the
reason is simple: a pip on gold is not a pip on EURUSD. On gold, one pip is 0.10 of a
dollar in price. A 1.00 lot is 100 ounces. So one pip on a 1.00 lot is ten dollars, and
the price of gold has nothing to do with it.

The numbers that matter

Lot size Ounces One pip A 50 pip move A 100 pip move
0.01 (micro) 1 $0.10 $5 $10
0.10 (mini) 10 $1.00 $50 $100
0.33 33 $3.30 $165 $330
1.00 (standard) 100 $10.00 $500 $1,000

How to read and count pips on gold

  1. Take the difference between the two prices. 4,212.40 minus 4,200.00 is 12.40.
  2. Divide it by 0.10. 12.40 divided by 0.10 is 124 pips.
  3. Multiply the pips by $10 for every 1.00 lot. 124 pips on a 0.10 lot is 124 x $1 = $124.

A quick shortcut: every whole dollar in the gold price is 10 pips, so read the dollars and add a zero.

How many pips does gold move in a day?

We measured it on our own broker feed. Over the 70 trading days from 23 June to 28 September 2026, the gap between gold’s daily high and low was about 900 pips on a typical day, roughly $90 of price. Most days fell between about 740 and 1,160 pips. The quietest day moved 508 pips and the busiest moved 2,022.

That is why a stop that feels tight on a currency pair is tiny on gold, and why the lot size you pick matters more than where you enter.

Why gold pip value trips people up

Two things cause most of the confusion.

  • Brokers quote gold differently. Some show 4380.25 and some show
4380.2. On a five digit feed, what looks like a pip on screen can be a tenth of one.
Check what a one point move does to your open profit and you will know which you are on.
  • Gold moves in hundreds of pips, not tens. A hundred pip day on
EURUSD is a big day. On gold it can happen in an hour. That is why position size matters
far more here than the entry does.

What this means for size

A 0.10 lot on gold moves a dollar per pip. If your stop is 40 pips away, that trade
risks forty dollars. Most people size from the lot they are used to on other pairs and
then wonder why one gold trade moves their account more than five EURUSD trades did.
Size from the stop, not from habit. The lot size calculator
does that part.

Gold pip questions

What is 1 pip in gold price?

A $0.10 change in the XAUUSD price. Gold going from 4,200.00 to 4,200.10 is one pip.

How much is 1 pip on a 0.01 lot of gold?

Ten cents. A 0.01 lot is one ounce, so a $10 move in the price, which is 100 pips, is worth $10.

Is a pip on gold 0.01 or 0.10?

Most gold traders and signal services count 0.10 as one pip, and that is what we use. Some platforms call 0.01 a point. Check what a one dollar move does to your open profit: on a 0.01 lot it should be $1, which is 10 pips.

How do I calculate pips on XAUUSD?

Subtract the two prices and divide by 0.10. Then multiply the pips by $10 for every 1.00 lot you hold.
