Gold pip value: what one pip is actually worth
On XAUUSD a pip is not what most people think it is. Work it out for your size.
Gold pip value confuses more people than any other part of trading XAUUSD, and the
reason is simple: a pip on gold is not a pip on EURUSD. On gold, one pip is 0.10 of a
dollar in price. A 1.00 lot is 100 ounces. So one pip on a 1.00 lot is ten dollars, and
the price of gold has nothing to do with it.

The numbers that matter
| Lot size | Ounces | One pip | A 50 pip move | A 100 pip move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 (micro) | 1 | $0.10 | $5 | $10 |
| 0.10 (mini) | 10 | $1.00 | $50 | $100 |
| 0.33 | 33 | $3.30 | $165 | $330 |
| 1.00 (standard) | 100 | $10.00 | $500 | $1,000 |
Why gold pip value trips people up
Two things cause most of the confusion.
- Brokers quote gold differently. Some show 4380.25 and some show
4380.2. On a five digit feed, what looks like a pip on screen can be a tenth of one.
Check what a one point move does to your open profit and you will know which you are on. - Gold moves in hundreds of pips, not tens. A hundred pip day on
EURUSD is a big day. On gold it can happen in an hour. That is why position size matters
far more here than the entry does.
What this means for size
A 0.10 lot on gold moves a dollar per pip. If your stop is 40 pips away, that trade
risks forty dollars. Most people size from the lot they are used to on other pairs and
then wonder why one gold trade moves their account more than five EURUSD trades did.
Size from the stop, not from habit. The lot size calculator
does that part.
