Know your costs

What your broker costs you on gold

Spread and commission decide how much of a signal you actually keep. Put your own numbers in and see the year.

Gold trading cost is the quietest thing that decides your month. Two traders can take the exact same signal and finish the month in different places. The difference is what the broker takes. On gold a wide spread eats the first few pips of every single trade, and a marked up commission takes another bite on the way in and on the way out. None of it shows up in a signal. It just quietly removes your edge.

Put your own numbers in below and see what a year costs you.

Your cost, one year
On raw ECN pricing
Difference

Based on 250 trading days a year, 1.00 lot per trade, and commission charged on both sides. On gold a 1.00 lot position is 100 ounces, so every 0.01 of spread is one dollar per lot.

What our gold trading cost was

We measured this on our own account, not from a table. Our commission on gold dropped from $10.53 to $3.00 per lot when we moved the account across. Same trades, same size, same strategy. That is a 72 percent cut in cost and nothing about how we trade changed.

What to check before you open an account

  • The raw spread on gold, not on EURUSD. Brokers advertise the pair that flatters them. Ask for gold.
  • Commission per lot, per side. Some quote the round turn and some quote one side. Make them say which.
  • The spread during news. A tight spread that widens to 60 points at 8:30 is not a tight spread.
  • Whether they mark up the raw feed. A raw account with a marked up commission is not a raw account.

Where we trade

We use a raw ECN account on gold. Click here to open an account. The account has to be opened through that link to get this pricing. Open one any other way and you are on their standard retail spread and commission instead. It is a referral link and the broker pays us a rebate, which costs you nothing.

Every trade we close is published in pips on the results page and posted as it happens on the free Telegram channel.
